Death Valley: Sand, Salt, Sky

We left Joshua Tree and drove through dessert-y nothing-ness for 5 hours (with a stop of B's choosing at the Mad Greek for a fresh strawberry shake) and eventually arrived at huge, majestic nothing-ness, aka Death Valley. This National Park is truly otherworldly: huge mountains tower behind gigantic sand dunes, way-below-sea-level-salt flats and boulders, while deep gorges filter the sunlight and play with shadows, and pastel rocks dot the horizon.

Every day we drove for miles and hiked many miles too. If you just walk a few extra steps, you can escape the other people and coaches. And if you can cope with the bizarre hotel options (think of it as inspiration for your first novel), a trip to Death Valley will be mind-blowing, awe-inspiring, and overwhelming (in a good way). In three days we visited the Mesquite Flat Sand Dunes, Zabriskie Point, Golden Canyon, Titus Canyon, Artists Palette, Badwater Basin, and Devil's Golf Course. So, with that said, here's a glimpse of all those spots (I'm not sorry for the somewhat excessive number of shots of sand and salt!).

Cars of Mérida

The other reason Mérida is so idyllic? The cars. Whether falling apart or newly renovated, a large number of the city's population travels around in vintage Beetles: the fumes don't smell great but their picturesque existence more than makes up for it.

Home for the Holidays

We ran away from New York for a couple of weeks over Christmas. I've only been back in Brooklyn for a few days, but this peaceful time at home already feels like many moons ago. After a few days in London (photos of that time to come!), we split our time between my family and B's, with a day spent in Cambridge in the middle. It was restful, peaceful, easy, and I feel like a huge part of me has been left behind, in the place that will always be home.

Grey clouds were interspersed with dashes of sunlight. Soup and D's breakfast juice balanced out all the cheese and sweet treats. We ran and walked and read and slept. The pets got excessive amounts of love, and we decided Cambridge would be a wonderful place to live.

Table on Ten Snapshots

Yes, it has been several months since we visited Table on Ten, but better late than never. This was the most blissful weekend in my dream home, Table on Ten's studio up on the hill. We ate, ran, hiked, bathed, cooked, slept, read, shopped the farm stands, and talked. Surrounded by space, silence, light, trees, and rolling hills, we promised ourselves we'd return again soon. As soon as we possibly can.
