5 Things

5 happy moments from this week:

1. Breakfasting on Pearl & Groove Bakery granola
2. Planning and reflection
3. Pomegranates
4. Eucalyptus
5. The Yellow Table spicy maple-rosemary nuts

Reading this week has been this fascinating piece on architecture and cake; Molly Yeh made the most beautiful cake; beautiful ballet inspiration shared by Garance Doré.

Happy weekend friends!

Angelina, Paris

January in Paris is cold. Really cold. We did have beautiful, bright blue skies but we also had numb fingers and toes. It's a well known fact that the only way to save oneself from the Paris chill is with hot chocolate.

Staying in our favourite little spot in the 6ème, Angelina helped us out with our urgent hot chocolate requirements. This amazing location in the Jardin du Luxembourg has been open for a couple of years now, and sneaking in the door straight to the counter for a chocolat chaud à emporter warms my heart. The most wonderfully rich, smooth and sweet chocolate served in a paper cup with a little straw for easy drinking makes me all the more certain that my body and soul really belongs in this city of lights.

Comme à Lisbonne

I turned up in Paris with a long list of things to eat, and a smaller list of things to do. I hadn't been back to my favourite of all cities since I lived there a couple of years ago. There were places to revisit and new places to discover, but not enough time to do them. My prioritising skills came into their own.

The first coffee à Paris had to be drunk tucked away in the Marais at Comme à Lisbonne. I discovered this haven of Portuguese custard tarts, coffee and a few other treats for sale on one of my last weekends living in Paris and kicked myself for not finding it earlier. Many more custard tarts and coffees would have been welcomed into my Parisian life.

A tray of custard tarts sits at the front of the shop, with a coffee machine behind it and two little stools and a counter running down the side. People will drop in and pick up their box of pastéis de nata while you fill the space sipping on a wonderful coffee and nibbling the best pastéis de nata to be found outside of Lisbon.

Breakfast at Caravan

Birthday's require the best breakfast. And this year was at Caravan, before hopping on the train à Paris.

Already filled with people at 9am on a sunny Friday in January, I've come to accept that this place is always buzzing.

Breakfast is one meal Caravan have perfected.

There's something for those of us who want to eat cake as soon as we wake up, and something for those of us who want to make up to a salty, savoury plate. All washed down with a perfect cup of coffee.

Coconut bread with lemon curd cream cheese and rhubarb for me and maman.

Jalapeno cornbread with fried eggs and guindilla pepper for papa. And a lot of coffee.

Suitably fuelled with caffeine and sugar, I smiled and skipped my way through the rest of the day.
